Dayton Bluffs Preserve is a newly-formed nature preserve along the banks of the Fox, just north of Ottawa. As the poster says, volunteers are needed to clear brush and collect seeds.  More about the preserve here.

The Ottawa City Council is considering plans for a significant riverfront revitalization project. Options include dockage for site-seeing boats, a harbor for transients, two music venues, a carousel and maybe even a zip line across the river! The Times has the full story. 

Local union members volunteered their time to build resting benches and landing sites to enhance the Illinois River Canoe & Kayak Trail. The Peoria Journal Star published a story covering the dedication celebration. The Greater Peoria Economic Council helped coordinate the effort, funded by grant money.

Environmental groups continue to warn about the dangers of coal ash pollution from coal-fired power plants upriver that threaten the Des Plaines and Illinois rivers. One group, Environment Illinois, issued a halloween press release outlining scary water quality problems impacting the Great Lakes and Illinois’ waterways.

Last, but definitely not least, the area’s newest brewery, Tangled Roots, will open soon in downtown Ottawa. Joining Radium City Brewing as the latest local beer-maker, downtown Ottawa visitors have been watching the major remodeling taking place at Tangled Roots’ building on La Salle Street.
